ANZPT Canberra 2010 – LIVE UPDATE
[ Posted June 14th, 2010 ] by BENjTRON
Jason Gray wins ANZPT Canberra, John Maklouf eliminated in second place. And just like that, it’s all over – after some fine post-flop play, the deciding hand was a pre-flop clash of Jason Gray’s 4♠ 4♣ against the A♠ 3♦ of John Maklouf. Gray shoved all-in after Maklouf had raised to 100,000, and he quickly followed Gray into the pot. The board ran out T♠ 2♣ Q♦ 8♣ Q♣ and we have a champion.
Jason Gray – Winner of the 1st ANZPT in Canberrea and takes home $95,930 AUD Heads-up play lasted 105 minutes, and it was more than six hours after play reached four-handed that the winner was decided. Congratulations to Jason Gray, who takes home $95,930 and commiserations to a gallant John Maklouf, who pockets $60,635. It’s John’s second final table of the season and earns him a swag of ANZPT Player of the Year points. Courtesy of http://www.pokerstarsblog.com/
The ascendancy is back with John Maklouf after Jason Gray called his bet of 200,000 on a board showing 5♥ 7♥ 8♦ K♠ T♥. Maklouf showed J♣ 9♠ for a straight, with a frustrated Gray reluctantly sending his cards into the muck. Maklouf is on 2.6 million, with Gray back to 950,000. This is the longest heads-up battle in ANZPT history, with the match having ticked past the 85-minute mark.

Level 26: 25,000/50,000, ante 5000 John Maklouf raised pre-flop to 100,000, Jason Gray called and they watched the flop comes Q♠ K♣ 2♣. Maklouf bet 300,000, Gray said “I’m all-in” and Maklouf called. It was Gray’s Q♥ 8♠ ahead of Maklouf’s Q♣ 6♠, until the board paired on the turn 2♠. Chop it up boys. Both players have pretty much 1.8 million each. Not much seperating these 2. I dare say even if one does take the first hit, both players have shown that can keep their heads level and make a return. Onward we go…
Jason Gray just made the call of the tournament to regain the chip lead in the ANZPT Canberra Main Event. John Maklouf raised to 80,000 pre-flop, Gray called and the flop was dealt 9♥ 8♦ 4♠. Maklouf checked, Gray bet 150,000 and Maklouf called. It was check-check on the turn 4♦, then Maklouf bet 300,00 on the river 3♦. Gray had a long think but called and showed A♦ T♣. Maklouf looked shocked as he turned over his Q♠ T♠ and watched his stack fall to 1.6 million. Gray is back up to 1.95 million. Courtesy of http://www.pokerstarsblog.com/
The pendulum has swung once again with John Maklouf as he has now started to pick up pots from Jason Gray. It’s been series a raise fold hands. One hand, with more than 400,000 in the pot, both players checked the river on a board of J♦ 8♣ 9♣ J♣ 2♠. Maklouf showed 9♦ 7♣ and Gray 6♣ 7♥, giving Maklouf the pot. He’s up to 2.25 million and Gray moves back to 1.3 million.
Jason Gray has been picking up almost every pot. However, you can score the first big one for John Maklouf – on a flop of K♦ 3♠ 9♥, Jason Gray called Maklouf’s bet of 100,000 and they watched the turn fall 7♣. Maklouf bet 135,000, Gray called and the river showed 4♦. Maklouf bet 300,000, Gray called but mucked his cards when Maklouf showed K♠ 7♠ for two pair. That takes him back to 1.4 million, with Gray still leading on 2.1 million. There is still some fight in Maklouf, he won’t be going away too easily. With 1.4 million chips vs 2.1 million we have a real fight on our hands.
We didn’t even make it to the break before PokerStars Qualifier Adam Cameron was eliminated in third place taking home $34,390 for his efforts. Cameron shoved from the button with 9♠ 5♥ with Maklouf along for the ride, showing Q♣ J♦. The flop of 3♣ 9♣ 6♦ put Cameron ahead but the turn Q♥ returned the lead to Maklouf, and Cameron was off to the cage when the river showed 8♠. Gray and Maklouf are now on a short break and when they return, we’re heads-up for the first PokerStars.net ANZPT Canberra title. Gray holds a 2:1 chip lead (2.36 million to Maklouf’s 1.2 million).
Jason Gray watches his rivals carve each other up – he leads into the heads-up duel with John Maklouf
Level 24: 15,000/30,000, ante 3000 Adam Cameron is down to just 300,000 after losing an all-in battle to Jason Gray. It was Cameron’s Q♥ J♠ starting hand and staying behind Gray’s A♣ Q♠ as the board fell 4♥ 8♠ A♠ 7♣ 3♠. Cameron now holds just 300,000. On the next hand, Gray was all-in after the flop 2♥ 6♥ 7♠, with Maklouf making the call. The turn 3♥ and river 6♠ ensured Gray’s 7♥ T♥ the pot, as Maklouf’s A♥ T♦ sailed into the muck. Maklouf is down to 1.8 million, Gray is back to 1.5 million. Each of the final 3 players have had their share of yoyo chip stacks. It’s hard to make any call on who will win this. Today has seen a flurry in player eliminations from 15 down to this 3, however the final 3 have been playing 3-handed now for well into 3 hours as they throw their chips backward and forward.
John Maklouf has taken a grip on the ANZPT Canberra Main Event after taking a big pot from Adam Cameron. There was more than 500,000 in the pot before the flop of Q♣ 8♣ 2♦. Cameron bet 285,000, Maklouf announced “all-in” and Cameron folded. Maklouf holds 2.35 million, Cameron is down to 680,000 and Gray holds 520,000.

Now it’s Adam Cameron’s turn to make a run at the title, as he’s just taken another big pot from Jason Gray. The 2008 APPT Grand Final runner-up called Cameron’s 90,000 pre-flop bet and they watched the flop fall 5♥ 8♣ J♦. Both checked, Cameron bet 145,000 on the turn Q♠ and Gray called. Cameron then shoved all-in on the river 9♠, Gray said “you’re good” and mucked before Cameron showed K♠ 7♠ for a busted straight draw. That’s an extra 250,000 for Cameron, leaving Gray as the short stack.
Level 23: 12,000/24,000, ante 3000 It’s been a bit of a snail’s pace since the dinner break as there isn’t much action between the 3 players that are left. Most raises have been met with prompt folding. John Maklouf has taken off the gloves and become the aggressor as the difference in the three stacks narrows. Jason Gray made it 73,000 before the flop, Maklouf called and the flop fell 4♦ 7♠ 7♥. Gray bet 75,000, Maklouf called and the turn came T♣. Gray checked, Maklouf bet 200,000 and Gray folded. That left all three players holding between 1.1 and 1.4 million in chips. Such is the closeness now of all stacks, it really is anyone’s game.
Jason Gray’s stack has steadily dwindled since the dinner break but he’s still holding a narrow lead

Players are on a 20-min break. The 3 players left are now able to re-assess how they will play out 3-handed. Current Chip Counts are: Jason Gray – 1,700,000
Michael Chon eliminated in fourth place, $28,236 After doubling once through John Maklouf, Michael Chon was again all-in and Maklouf declared he was also all-in. However, he turned white when Jason Gray quietly muttered “I call” and turned over K♣ A♦. Maklouf showed A♣ 9♣ while Chon held Q♦ 4♣. The board ran out 6♦ 5♦ 6♥ 2♣ 2♦ giving Gray and a relieved Maklouf a split, and sending Chon to the rail in fourth. Payouts are available at the bottom of the page.

Level 22 (10,000/20,000, ante 2000) Jason Gray is really starting to impose himself on the other players at this final table. He has just taken a pot away from Adam Cameron. After a pre-flop raise of 53,000, Gray re-popped it to 130,000 and Cameron made the call. The flop came A♠ K♥ Q♥ Gray bet 200,000, Cameron called. The turn came 4♣ Cameron checked, Gray bet 320,000 and Cameron folded and another big pot went the way of the experienced Jason Gray. Chon meanwhile has fallen from grace and is down to just 54,000 chips. Hard to believe as Chon held 1.7million only a couple of hours ago. It may be a day of what could have been for Chon as it will be near impossible to recover from here.
Level 22 (10,000/20,000, ante 2000) John Maklouf made the big call on the flop, in response to Adam Cameron’s all-in bet of 5♣ 8♦ 7♣, but both players could only smile when the cards were turned over – A♦ 7♦ versus A♣ 7♠. The board ran out 6♣ J♣ and each player shared the pot as the dealer dealt the split pot to each player.
Adam Cameron has done it again. He was all-in with K♥ J♣, once again needing help against Michael Chon’s A♣ T♥. The flop fell 8♦ 5♦ 4♠ 6♥ leaving Cameron to hit a K, J or 7. Sure enough, the K♠ sailed down the river to propel Cameron north of 800,000 while Chon, unbelievably, is down to 515,000.
There are not so many chips in front of Michael Chon after a miserable level 21

The attack on Michael Chon’s stack continues, with Adam Cameron the main beneficiary. Cameron has twice doubled through Chon, the most recent hand when his A♥ 2♠ connected on the flop of 7♠ 6♥ 2♥. Chon’s A♣ 8♠ needed help, which didn’t arrive on the turn 3♠ or river 7♣. Chon is down to just 1.1 million, while Jason Gray leads on 1.7 million, John Maklouf is on 560,000 and Cameron is on 330,000. Courtesy of http://www.pokerstarsblog.com/
Players are currently on their 1st scheduled break. Jason Gray after winning the monster pot has started to make some dents in Chon’s chip lead. It’s going to take some work from John Maklouf and Adam Cameron if they want take some of the $95,930 1st place pie. 4 Players remain. Chipcounts are: Michael Chon – $1,600,000
The ANZPT Canberra Main Event has been thrown wide open after a massive pot which resulted in the elimination of Rennie Carnevale. The ANZPT Adelaide winner announced “all-in” from the button for 120,000, Jason Gray re-raised, Michael Chon shoved all-in over the top and Gray insta-called. Wow.
Rennie Carnevale celebrates his second cash for season two of the ANZPT
It was A♠ A♣ for Gray, A♥ K♣ for Chon and a dominated K♦ 8♠ for Carnevale. The board came T♠ 8♥ 7♠ T♥ A♦, giving Gray a massive pot of 1.3 million. Carnevale joins an elite club of players who’ve reached two ANZPT final tables, and he climbs to second ahead of Andrew Scarf on the ANZPT Player of the Year leaderboard. As promised. Current Chip Counts… Michael Chon still has a strong on the table, however when Jason Gray is at the table and he has chips, you know the other players will be hoping he doesn’t accumulate anymore chips. Rennie Carnevale is still in the hunt and has been nursing his short-stack up the payouts.
Andrew Scarf’s deep run in the 2010 ANZPT Canberra event has come to an end. For his efforts he will take home $19,005 in prizemoney. Updated chip counts coming soon. All payouts to this point are available and the end of this page.
Alan Al-hantosh, who qualified online through PokerStars has finished in 7th place for a score of $15,385. The next player exiting will receive $19,005.
