2009 World Series of Poker - WSOP

Has it really been that long since the 2008 Championships? No is the simple answer. I feel like I say this every year, "has a year gone by already?", "is it WSOP time again?". This year especially, because this year, it won’t be a year since the last Champion was crowned. November 9 last year was when the 2008 Main event finished up, so it really hasn’t and won’t be long til this years Championships are underway.

I think about the delay of the final table and if it was a success last year - I’m still on the fence, but with reasons. First of all, I don’t think the "hype" that was expected to fall on the world actually happend. But I do think it created a small buzz, which is probably better than no buzz. I felt that there was a period of forgetting about the whole thing during the big suspension of play – which is not a good thing. But the numbers last year don’t lie either.

For total entrants, records flew past, with 2008 recording a tick under 58,000 players putting up the dosh for a chance at a WSOP bracelet. The prize money pushed over $180,000,000 (yes there 9 digits in that number). So I guess with economic times and a struggling world, it seems poker, for now, has remained a constant, and if im allowed to say… slightly growing market.

So what are the changes this year. Well there aren’t too many. 55 events last year, 57 this year. Being the 40th year of the Annual World Series of Poker, Harrah’s has decided to kick off with a 40k No Limit Hold’em event, which will no doubt bring some other record in to play. Most of the 10k "World Championship" events are still there, which I like and the ever popular amoungst the professional ranks, the 50k Chip Reese HORSE Championship will be back once again. Which reminds me about the representation of some good mixed games and not just hold’em.

The 2009 World Series of Poker will start on May 27th and cease on July 14th for the final table, which will be played after delay, on November 7th.
