WSOP 2008 Kicks off with a bang! Nenad Medic wins Event #1 $10,000 Pot Limit Hold'em World Championship
In a pro-packed affair, the final table of 9, boasted 5 one million dollar tournament winners. Here's how the final table lined up with their chip standings going into the final day...
Seat 1: Mike Sowers 675,000 The action started quickly, and by the 5th hand of final table play, the familiar face of Phil 'unibomber' Laak was gone. His pockets jacks were no match for Medic's pocket aces. Mike Sowers was next to go in 8th place, trying to make a move pre-flop with 94, he fell to the sword of Mike Sexton and his pocket Queens. The latest big signing to Fulltiltpoker.com was Patrik Antonius and he was also next go in seventh place. This time it was Andy Bloch who eliminated big cash game player. Again, the action was pre-flop, with Antonius all-in with K10 of hearts against the A4 of clubs of Bloch. The board ran out 99575 with only the one heart and Patrick was gone. Chris Bell was the next to be sent to the rail when his Ace of hearts and 3 of Clubs ran into Medic's pockets Jacks pre-flop. 5th place went to Amit Makhija, Andy Bloch again the eliminator. Pre-flop again, it was Amit's A3 out-kicked by Bloch's A7. The final four went on to play out a series of raise, re-raise plays and generally each player respected each re-raise. Bloch however, the one who was chipping away. Kathy Liebert, who seems like she is always the last lady standing, continued her good run in the tournament knocking out the World Poker Tour voice Mike Sexton in 4th place. She set the trap, after flopping Top and bottom pair Aces and 8's, Sexton walked straight in, believing his top pair A6 was good. After hours of final table play Andy Bloch had a chance to finish the tournament when he had Liebert and Medic all-in on hand #152. It was Bloch's 99's vs Medic's QQ's vs Lieberts 66. Medic flopped a set of Queens and by the turn both Bloch and Liebert were drawing dead. Liebert finished the tournament in 3rd place. Updated chip counts going into heads up were:
